Build Your Own Golf Ball Display

Build your own golf ball display with some basic power tools. You can build this 56 golf ball display with a drill, power saw, razor knife and three drill bits.

Chuck Drill

We will start with the tools required. The first being a power drill. 3/8" chuck size either a corded drill or a cordless drill. The second tool you will need is a power saw. A 7 1/4" circular saw will do. Third you will need a sharp razor knife. Last you will need 3 drill bits. You will need a 1/8" bit suitable for wood or metal, a 1/2" reduced shank bit suitable for wood or metal and a 7/8" reduced shank bit suitable for metal.

Chuck Drill

Now we will move onto the material required for the display. You will need:
2 each 1" X 4" X 48" Pine, Oak, Poplar or wood of your chose
1 each 1/2" X 48" wood dowel rod
1 each 1/8" X 48" wood dowel rod
You can use the wood of your choice. Pine is easier to work with for a novice, but the dowel rods will probably oak at most home improvement stores so oak or poplar 1 X 4's will match the 1/2" dowel rods better. While at the home improvement store you want to pick up some stain, polyurethane and sandpaper if you do not have these items in your shop.

Okay lets build this display. First we will start by ripping the 1"X4"X 48" boards into half with the power saw. You will have 4 pieces 1-11/16" X 48" . The 1-11/16" dimension is about the same size of the diameter of a golf ball. Now we take the 4 pieces and cut into 8 twenty inch pieces. These pieces will be the shelves the golf balls rest on. Now we take the 1/2"X48" dowel rod a cut two pieces 21 3/4" long. These will be the supports for the shelves. Next we take the 1/8" dowel rod and cut 16 pieces 1-1/4" long.

It easiest to cut the 1/8" dowel rod with your sharp razor knife. Now we will drill the holes in the shelf boards for the supports and the golf balls. Take your 20" shelf boards and draw a light pencil line down the center of the board. Measure 13/16" from the edge of the board to achieve this. Next from one end put a pencil mark at 1-1/8", 2-1/2", 5", 7-1/2", 10", 12-1/2", 15", 17-1/2" and 18-7/8". Put these pencil marks on the center line that you marked on the length of the boards. These are center marks that you are going to drill. Using the 1/2" drill bit drill completely through all the shelf boards at the 1-1/8" mark and the 18-7/8" mark. Next using the 7/8" bit we are going to drill for the golf ball rests. You are going to drill at the 2-1/2", 5", 7-1/2", 10", 12-1/2", 15" and 17-1/2" marks.

Putting light pressure on the drill you only want to drill approximately 1/8" deep or so to form a 7/8" round dimple in the wood for the ball to rest in. After all your dimples are drilled now would be a good time to stain your shelves and 1/2" dowel rod. It is a lot easier unassembled. Now it is assembly time. Take your first shelf and insert 1 of the 1/2" dowel rods in each end where you drilled the 1/2" hole through the shelf. Now take the second shelf and slide down the dowel rods until you have 2-1/4" between shelf 1 & 2. Repeat this step for the remaining shelves. When you reach the top you should have 8 shelves spaced evenly at 2-1/4". The final step. Lay the assembled display face down on a table with the sawed edge up. Using the 1/8" bit drill through the shelf into the 1/2" dowel rod. You want to drill 1-3/8". You can put a piece of masking tape on your drill bit 1-3/8" up from the tip to drill uniform depths. Now that you have all 16 holes drilled take the 1/8" dowel rod pieces you cut 1-1/4" long and insert them into the 1/8" holes you just drilled. Put a little wood glue on the rods push them in until even with the shelf. It may take a few light taps with a hammer. You are done with assembly. Now you can put 1 or 2 coats of polyurethane on and enjoy your project.

I Need a Cordless Drill Or Driver, But Which One is Best For Me?

A cordless drill/driver is very important in completing most home-improvement projects around the home. Whether you're hanging curtain rods, building a deck or fence, running electrical wires, or installing shelves in a closet, you'll need to drill holes and drive screws. You've gone to Sears, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Lowes. They all have at least 20 different cordless drills hanging on display. How do you decide which one is best for you?

Chuck Drill

Cordless drills have changed dramatically in the last two years and the newest generation features small size, powerful motors and fast charging lithium-ion batteries. Many of today's drills are half the weight and size of the same power drill 2 years ago. Don't let your husband or father tell you otherwise, these new cordless drills will do the work you need them to do. Today's drill/drivers put enough muscle into your hand to tame even the largest jobs without wearing you out from handling them all day. Five important measures of a quality cordless drill/driver are size, torque, speed, batteries, and clutch.

Chuck Drill

Expect to pay to 0 for a quality 180 inch/lb sub compact cordless drill/driver. 0 to 0 for a quality 320 -400 inch/lb compact drill/driver and 0 and more for a quality 500 inch/lb full size cordless drill.

SIZE - The physical size of the newest cordless drills is a lot smaller than the drills of just a year ago. The new sub-compact lithium drill/drivers weigh in at 2 lbs. The equivalent nicad powered cordless drill of just two years ago weighs in at 5.2 lbs. These new drills are easier to hold and allow you to get into tight places. All the new drills have lights to help you see inside of closets and work in normal household lighting situations. In fact many of the newest drills will easily fit in your kitchen drawer.

TORQUE - When I talk about a cordless drill's power, I'm really talking about how much rotational force, or torque, it produces. I am not talking about the battery voltage. This rating, in inch-pounds will help you compare one drill to the other and decide if the drill is big enough for the tasks you want it to do. 180 inch/lbs is enough power for most drilling, screwing and repair tasks around the home, 320 inch/lbs is enough for most home construction and remodeling tasks. Only consider a higher torque full size drill if you have a lot of lag bolts to set when building a deck, holes to drill in concrete, or using a large specialty attachment like a bulb auger (for planting tulip bulbs) When you're shopping for a cordless drill, read the box or go to the manufacturer's web site and look for the torque numbers on the specification page.

SPEED - Today's new lithium powered drills will have two or more variable speed settings. Usually a 0-600 rpm (revolutions per minute) and 1-1600 rpm. The lower speed is used for drilling large holes, driving large screws and precision tasks. The higher speed is used for drilling small holes, countersinking, and setting large numbers of smaller screws. When using your drill always start on the low speed setting and only switch to the higher speed when you get used to the task and find you can work accurately with the higher speed. Don't buy a cordless drill/driver with just one speed. The one speed is usually too slow for most tasks and many times is an indication of a cheap, low quality drill.

BATTERIES AND CHARGERS - A few years ago, environmentally friendly nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries began replacing the popular nickel-cadmium (NiCd) cells that powered most cordless tools. Those batteries have now been replaced with the same type of battery found in your cell phone, the lithium-ion (LiIon) battery. The new lithium-ion batteries have equal or better run time, half the weight, no memory issues, and the ability to hold a full charge for more than a year while sitting in your kitchen drawer. Prices have dropped on the lithium powered tools so much that buying a NiCad is no longer worthwhile choice. You can now purchase a good, lightweight homeowner drill with a lithium-ion battery for as little as .00.

Today's latest chargers are energy-star rated and are very efficient. The new chargers will also charge the batteries much faster than before. The newest chargers will charge a battery in 30 to 50 minutes. In most home repair projects one battery is all you need. With the new lithium batteries and chargers you can keep the battery fully charged and it will always be ready to work for you. For larger tasks, if you start a project with two fully-charged batteries, and always keep one on the charger, you'll be able to work constantly as the new chargers can "fill up" a depleted battery as fast as you can drain the one on the drill. You're probably not going to have wait for a battery unless you're driving screws nonstop. In my experience, when building outdoor furniture I use one drill for the pilot holes and one for putting in screws. The new chargers will charge batteries fast enough that I only have to keep one extra battery on charge and I can work constantly without having to wait on the charger.

The cordless drill manufactures have yet to figure out that it would be beneficial to have the battery connect to the drill the same way so you could use the batteries on more than one brand, but a few retailers have developed lines of cordless tools that all work off the same battery. One manufacture has over 35 home repair and lawn and garden tools that use the same lithium battery. I personally would not even consider buying a NiMH or NiCd battery powered cordless drill anymore. Make sure you can remove the battery from the drill. There are a few cordless drills out there that have the batteries permanently attached to drill. This does not allow you to charge a battery while using the drill. This is another sign of a cheap drill.

CLUTCH CONSISTENCY - All of the quality cordless drill/drivers will have an adjustable clutch (A set of numbers between the chuck and the body of the drill.) A clutch stops the chuck from turning when it encounters a set amount of resistance. This prevents the drill/driver from destroying the screw-head, breaking the screw, or driving it too deeply into wood. Most quality drills today have from 16 to 25 clutch settings so you can fine-tune it and set your screws to the proper depth.

Cheap Used Golf Cart

Deciding on buying a cheap used golf cart can be a great way to save some money on your next golf cart purchase. Many times it is possible for one to locate cheap used golf carts that have been very well maintained from country club golf courses, for example.

Chuck Drill

Before you buy a cheap used golf cart, there are some things worth considering that may help you find the golf cart that you've got in mind. First of all, you can buy golf carts from retailers, golfing facilities or individuals. Unless you have a specialty used golf cart retailer in your town or city, you're probably left with the options of golfing facility or individual from which to buy a cheap used golf cart.

Chuck Drill

I'd say the best route would be to approach any kind of golfing facility, such as a public golf course or country club, before looking into buying one from an individual. Sure, these facilities may not be interested in parting with any of their golf carts, but if they are you'd be getting a very well maintained golf cart. In many cases, golf carts that are used at golfing facilities such as these are so well maintained that you can really expect performance and durability like that of a brand new golf cart.

Of course really cheap used golf carts will more likely be older golf carts, that though they are well cared for, will not last as long as the newer models. Yet these cheapest golf carts may perfectly suit your situation if you want it for simple home use, will not be using it that frequently, or enjoy being frugal and realize that you simply don't need a fancier golf cart than one that runs.

If there is a public golf course located where you live, give them a call and see if they have any older golf carts that they may be willing to part with. You won't know until you call. And if you belong to a country club, by all means get the word out that you're looking for a fair deal on a gently used golf cart. Especially if you're a valued and long time member, chances are they will be able to help you out in some way. Even if they aren't ready to part with one of their fleet, perhaps they would be willing to purchase a new golf cart from their supplier at their discount, which they pass on to you.

Again, you'll never know until you try. Be persistent and kind; determined yet patient, and you'll find the cheap used golf cart deal you've got in mind. That's the thing about going after that which completes our lives, or even mundane aspects thereof, any effort, no matter how small will eventually add up. This means that eventually the information you need will come to you. Either through a chain of friends or by isolating a source of a quality and cheap used golf cart on your own, you will find what you need when you start asking and finding out what's available.

Shopping For A Woodworking Drill Press? Read This First!

At the risk of stating the obvious, I'd like to point out that the purpose of a drill press is to drill consistently straight holes accurately into wood, metal or plastic. The purpose of a drill press with a fence is to drill repetitive holes in a work piece at a consistent distance from the edge of a work piece. The purpose of a drill press with a fence and one (or two) stops is to drill holes at a consistent distance from one or both ends of a work piece or work pieces. The purpose of a drill press with a tilting table is to drill accurate and repeatable holes at an exact angle into the work piece. The purpose of an electric drill is to drill holes only where using a drill press would be impossible or impractical.

Chuck Drill

There are many things to consider when comparing drill presses such as motor size, table size and features, quill stroke, task lighting, laser availability, rotation speeds, ease of speed change, number of speeds, reversible feed handle (for lefties) and even the size of the base (for machine stability).

Chuck Drill

With regard to motor size, experience tells me that 3/4 horsepower is about the smallest size motor I'd like to see on a drill press. Some models try to get away with a 1/2 horsepower motor. There are times, especially at higher belt speed ratios that a half horsepower motor will prove to be inadequate.

I recently completed a side-by-side comparison review of 3 drill presses from three different manufacturers. The Powermatic 2800 PM was, by far, the most expensive I reviewed. The other 2 drill presses I considered are competitive with each other and list for about half the price of the Powermatic. I am discussing the 2800 PM as an example of what a drill press could be if money were no object. The other drill presses I reviewed were both very capable machines and would definitely do the job in an average woodworking shop.

The thing about the Powermatic is that it is just plain neat! It has all the bells and whistles a designer could dream up. The person who designed this thing clearly knows a lot about drill presses and woodworking from personal experience. If money were no object it would be the drill press I would buy. A guy can dream, can't he?

Like any Powermatic machine, this drill press has top quality, smooth operation and features to die for. It also has a somewhat hefty price tag when compared to other similar machines. That said, let's take a look at what you get for your money so you can decide if it's worth making the jump.

This drill press features twin LED lights, mounted in the head that do not cast shadows, head-mounted twin lasers that pinpoint the drill point, a 16" x 14" table with twin T-slots that expands to 16" x 26" when needed to support large work pieces. The table tilts left or right 90 degrees with a positive stop at zero degrees. A large handle makes raising or lowering the table easy. An additional, unique feature that is included in the price of this machine is an adjustable split fence with a dust collection port. A fence is essential to production work so plan on buying or making one if you don't buy this machine.

Speeds are easily changed from 400 to 3000 RPM with a handle on the upper left side of the head, meaning that you do not need to concern yourself with belt and pulley access. And, you can tell how fast or slow the machine is running by looking at a digital speed indicator right on the front of the head. Also in the front of the head is a lighted on/off switch with a key.

Powermatic gives you a full horsepower of motor power which insures that this machine can handle everything that is presented to it. The motor is single-phase and can be run on either 115 or 230 volts AC. It is pre-wired for 115 volts.

The 5/8" chuck is keyless, the depth stop is quick-setting and the feed handles can be mounted on the left or the right for ease of operation no matter which handle you like to use. Spindle travel is 4 3/8" for deep drilling capacity. For drilling into assembled projects, the maximum chuck to table distance is 30" and the maximum chuck to floor distance is 46". The column diameter is 3 1/8", the base measures 11 7/8" x 19 5/8". The drill press weighs in at 287 lbs, and ships at 302 lbs.

As much as I like this machine, in this economy, I might be wise to settle for a good machine from, say, Delta or Jet. At least I know what the possibilities are before I wake up and stop dreaming!

Production and Applications of Screw Threads

Screw threads can be commonly seen in many mechanical components. They have many applications. There are various objects to have them. They can be used for fastening. Screws, nut-bolts and studs having screw threads are used for temporarily fixing one part on to another part. They are used for joining such as co-axial joining of rods, and tubes, etc. They can be used for transmission of motion and power like lead screws of machine tools. Besides, they can also be applied for conveying and squeezing materials. For example, they are in screw conveyor, injection molding machine, and screw pump, etc.

Chuck Drill

Screw threads can be produced through various methods. The first one is casting. It only has a few threads over short length. It has less accuracy and poor finish. The second one is the removal process (machining). It is accomplished by various cutting tools in different machine tools like lathes, milling machines, drilling machines (with tapping attachment) and so on. This is widely used for high accuracy and finish. And it is employed for wide ranges of threads and volume of production from piece to mass production.

Chuck Drill

The third one is the forming (rolling). This method also has many characteristics. For instance, blanks of strong ductile metals like steels are rolled between threaded dies. Large threads are hot rolled followed by finishing and smaller threads are straight cold rolled to desired finish. And cold rolling attributes more strength and toughness to the threaded parts. This method is widely used for mass production of fasteners like bolts, screws etc.

In addition, the grinding is also a main approach for production of screw threads. It is usually done for finishing (accuracy and surface) after performing by machining or hot rolling but is often employed for direct threading on rods. Precision threads on hard or surface hardened components are finished or directly produced by grinding only. It is employed for wide ranges of type and size of threads and volume of production.

Screw threads can be divided into various types according to different classification methods. According to location, there are external screw thread (for example, on bolts) and internal screw thread (for example, in nuts). There are straight (helical) (e.g., bolts, studs), taper (helical), (e.g., in drill chuck), and radial (scroll) as in self centering chuck if classified according to configuration. Additionally, there are general threads (with usually wide thread spacing), pipe threads and fine threads (generally for leak proof) if divided according to compactness or fineness of threads.

There are still many other classifications. All in all, we can draw a conclusion that the screw threads have a very wide range of applications. Their functions and characteristics deserve our study.

Top 5 Most Exciting New Power Tools: 2010 - 2011

With the surplus of new power tools having recently entered the industrial market, many of which being quite incredible, the short-list of this year's most exciting new power tools has been surprisingly difficult to compile. With comprehensive tool line-ups (Makita, Dewalt, and Milwaukee each introduced a new line of cordless 12v power tools) and some acute power tool innovations that will change the way power tools are henceforth produced (like Bosch's articulating miter saw and Senco's pneumatic fusion technology), it seems there are more bar-raising power tools to kudo than can feasibly be mentioned. But, with effort to show no favor to any particular manufacturer or tool type, and in no particular order, let me briefly honor this year's picks for the most intense, most innovative, or simply most awesome new power tools.

Chuck Drill

- Bosch's GCM12SD Axial Glide Articulating Miter Saw:
Producing a virtually unparalleled smoothness of cut this Bosch saw is unbelievably precise and offers optimal operator control throughout every conceivable working condition. Its new axial system completely replaces the miter saw's former (and, comparatively, totally underdeveloped) rail system with two multi-joint articulating, or hinged, arms. This design enhances both the precision and durability of the saw, and also folds to sit flush with the back of the saw saving up to one foot of workspace and allowing you to use the saw with literally zero clearance behind it. The saw is surprisingly compact and with totally unparalleled efficiency, the axial glide miter saw truly has no equal.

Chuck Drill

- Milwaukee's 2426-22 M12 Cordless Oscillating Multi-Tool:
Milwaukee's version of the multi-tool is one of the lightest models on the market, its terrifically precise, and surprisingly powerful. Unlike other multi-tools, and a major part of why this tool is so cool, Milwaukee's 2426-22 is manufactured to be compatible with Bosch multi-tool accessories and includes a universal accessory adapter which allows the tool to be used with accessories from nearly every competing brand. This bold maneuver from Milwaukee coupled with the tool's superior design, quality, and value render it one of the coolest new power tools in the industry.
*Additionally, if you are more interested in a corded multi-tool, Bosch has also just released their Multi-X MX25EC-21 - a tool that truly deserves to share this space among the top 5 best new tools. It's a seriously awesome machine with tremendous powerful, and unlike the cordless models, it provides this big power without any limitations. Like the Milwaukee, this model also offers an accessory adapter but includes quite a few more accessories.

- Dewalt's DCT410S1 12v MAX Inspection Camera:
After a significant amount of research and testing, Dewalt has brought to the table a product unlike any other the industry has ever seen, a cordless inspection video and still-shot camera with more innovation than you'll want shake a stick at. Featuring a flexible, waterproof three-foot extension cable, a 3.5-in detachable LCD screen with a 3x zoom capacity, and a lasting, lightweight, and fast-charging battery system, the DCT410S1 camera allows users to see into, record, and photograph all the jobsite's otherwise impossible to reach spaces. This new breed of inspection camera allows users to see behind walls, inside pipes, and into the depths of other workzone nooks and crannies with unrivaled ease, range, and efficiency.

- Festool's 564250 T 15+3 Lithium Ion Cordless Drill Set:
Ahh, Festool - a manufacturer that never ceases to improve not only itself but the industry around it has developed a cordless drill with unequaled precision and ethereally smooth performance. The T 15+3 squeezes an intense amount of power into a terrifically compact design, and with the drill's FastFix tool-less chuck, easily interchangeable accessory chucks, and the ability to insert a bit directly into the motor, the drill literally does the work of five different tools (including a right angle drill) while remaining true, precise, compact, and lightweight. So, with a lasting, energy efficient brush-less motor, electronic torque and tool health monitoring, two speed settings, magnetic bit storage, the most intelligent lithium-ion battery and charging system, and despite being expensive, the T 15+3 is pretty much the coolest drill ever.

- Senco's FN65DA Cordless Fusion Finish Nailer:
Combining the very best of both pneumatic and cordless power tool technologies, Senco's Fusion is one of the most groundbreaking developments the power tool industry has ever seen. Requiring no cords, hoses, compressors, or fuel cells, the fusion finish nailer is completely streamlined for superior efficiency, and with a surplus of other perks like an integrated LED light, powerful, fast-charging battery system, patented Reflex-Shot mechanism, and incredible accuracy, Senco has, essentially, built the most self-sustaining, most evolved, most efficient, effective, and influential nailer ever built. As if that wasn't quite enough, Fusion technology is also more environmentally friendly earning this tool an overall assessment of super awesome.

And those beauties comprise my top 5 new power tools of 2010 and 2011. BUT, as I stressed before, there has been an influx of tremendous additions to the industrial power tool scene. Said influx, in fact, cannot go without a few more accolades. Accordingly, I have also put together a list of "honorable mentions," if you will, and I must digress for a small moment if only to say that it pains me to label these tools with a only measly "honorable mention." Each of them is uniquely innovative, awesome, and entirely deserving of something better than a "mention" of any caliber. But alas, here they are, the most honorable of honorable mentions (in no particular order):

- Makita's SH01W 12v Compact Cordless 3-3/8" Circular Saw
- Makita's LXFD01CW 18v Compact Cordless 1/2" Drill-Driver AND Dewalt's DCD710S2 12V MAX Drill Driver Kit (Sorry, I realize having two tools here is cheating but these drills are equally awesome and are really designed to perform in two separate spheres so one can't necessarily "beat out" the other, so, it makes perfect sense include them both, right?...)
- Dewalt's DW611PK Compact, Two-Base Router Kit
- Milwaukee's 2458-21 M12 Cordless Palm Nailer
- Milwaukee's 2625-21 M18 Cordless One-Handed Hackzall

Tips For Controlling Home Building Costs

Home building cost overruns can plague any home building or remodeling project. This occurs so frequently that it is recommended you include a 5 - 10% contingency fund in your budget. This will be used for items that you will have no control over, such as problems found with the land once excavation has begun.

Chuck Drill

Use the 5 tips in this article to control home building costs & minimize cost overruns.

Chuck Drill

Tip 1: Planning Your Home Building Costs Take the time to plan on paper what you want your house to look like. When doing your budget, visit stores to look at appliances, fixtures, cabinets, flooring, etc. In doing so, you will have a clearer idea of what you want and more importantly, what it will cost. Then, build that amount into your budget so there are no surprises later.

Tip 2: Specify Home Building Materials When working with a contractor, be sure that the specific materials you expect to be used are included in the bid and subsequently, in the contract. If your plans say wood floors and you are expecting teak and get oak, your recourse is limited because you did not specify it in writing.

Tip 3: Change Orders If you take the time to plan your home building project on paper before breaking ground, you can minimize the number of Change Orders. Change Orders frequently increase the cost of your project because they were not planned for in the original budgeting. If you agree to a change order and there is an expense involved, you are responsible for those costs unless the contractor has agreed he will pay for the change. Depending upon the extent of the change, it can involve modifying the original plans and having the local building authority review the changes including the labor and materials. Always keep an eye on any changes to the original plan and design and take the time to determine the financial impact of the change on your project. Changes to construction projects represent the single most common reason a project goes over budget and/or the completion is delayed. Take the time to plan before you build.

Tip 4: Size, Style and Shape of the Home These three factors can significantly contribute to the cost of building your dream home.

Size - Work with even numbers and have your home size rounded up or down to increments of two (2) feet. This reduces wasted materials. Also, build a home no deeper than 32 feet to eliminate the need for specially designed trusses. Style - Typically, it will cost less to build a two-story home than a one-story home of similar square footage. A two-story home will have a smaller roof and foundation. In addition, plumbing and ventilation are more compact in two-story homes. Shape - Having more corners and angles will increase the amount of labor and materials needed to build your dream home. A rectangular or box shaped home will cost less to build.

Tip 5: Two Most Common Times for Cost Overruns The beginning of your home building & construction project - when you are doing excavation and possibly putting in a well. You won't know what is under the ground until you begin to excavate. If you are drilling for a well, you will have no control over how far down you will need to drill for water. This is where having a contingency fund is essential.

The second most common time for a cost overrun is near the end of the project when you are selecting your finishes, i.e., cabinets, counter-tops, lighting and plumbing fixtures, flooring, appliances, etc. If you took the time to shop around before you did your budget, you can more easily stay within your budget when you do your final selections.

Cost overruns are common in any home building project, but with knowledge and planning they can be kept within manageable boundaries.

Makita LXT Drill-Driver

We reviewed the Makita LXT Drill/Driver, model number BHP452. This came in the kit LXT 702, which is a 7 piece combo kit. When you first pick up the drill, you will notice this has great balance in your hand. Balance is very important because if you are working with a drill all day long, you need to worry about fatigue. When your arm gets tired, your work begins to suffer. Overall this is a great drill, plenty of power.

Chuck Drill

We tested the drill a couple of ways. First we used a 1/2"drill bit and drilled into some lumber, no problem as we expected. Next we used used frostner bits and drilled bigger holes, again no problems. We also used a concrete bit and drilled into some concrete, when very smooth and didn't bog down.

Chuck Drill

We ran some other tests that we took video of and this drill ran through everything we expected. Over all we love this drill. The Makita has great balance and lots of power. We should mention we used the 3.0 amp batteries.

Below we listed some of the pro's and con's

Pro's
Light weight
Great Chuck
Good Balance

Con's
We really didn't have any cons to this drill, but we didn't find the little LED light in the front very useful. Also there is a belt clip attached to the drill. Some might find this beneficial, but if you use a tool belt, there is an option to take the belt clip off as you might not need it.

Baseball Hitting - How to Be a Great Hitter and Still Play Other Sports

My kids play lots of sports. Their favorite sport is always the sport that is currently in season. The challenge they are facing as they continue to play competitive sports into high school is the specialization that is occurring among so many of the athletes. The time spent in the off season working on the other sports gives the player with specialization a great advantage over the multi-sport (especially three sport) athlete. Many coaches, me included, tell their players after the last game of the season that preparation for next season begins tomorrow.   The summertime is the time when athletes should be able to develop their talent levels to participate and compete for the next year. It is a time for assessment of current skills and the time to develop a plan for how an athlete will improve those skills so he or she can be measurably better when the next season begins.

Chuck Drill

This is pretty easy if an athlete plays just one or maybe two sports but can be a real challenge of the athlete plays three. A player can typically make the time to devote to one sport quite easily. An hour a day is not too much to give to doing something that a player loves. When I was young I loved basketball and I would make time to practice each day for as long as I could. I was paranoid that if I did not play every day that I would lose my touch with the basketball and not shoot as well the next time out. Hitting a baseball is much the same. Many players believe they must hit every day in order to a great hitter. I also believe that is true.

The solution we use at our house to help my boys prepare for football, baseball and basketball is as follows. We follow this routine 5 out of 7 days per week. The idea is that football is a sport requiring strength, speed and agility more than anything else. Both of my sons are quarterbacks so throwing and ball handling are important as well. Baseball requires hitting, about 100 swings per day. Basketball requires ball handling and shooting.

We spend the first 30 minutes doing sprint drill at the park up the street. We will do ladder drills at full speed with a 6 second rest between sprints. We start at 40 yards and back, 50 and back, etc on up to 100 yards and back at full speed. We do this for 20 minutes and then close out with a series of short bursts of 30 yards each at full speed. I time them to see that they are getting faster each week.

After sprinting we move to hitting. The batting cage is right at the park so we get our equipment and then get our Heater Pitching Machine operational and take 100 swings each. The Heater will fire a pitch every 10 seconds and will hold 12 balls in the ball rack so we can get through each of them getting 100 swings in 30 minutes.  We take pitches outside to the opposite field, we work on hitting inside pitches hard on the pull side and work on the rest being hit with backspin right up the middle. We track how many get hit to the back of the batting cage.

We then move to basketball. I developed a workout that we alternate running every other day. One day we focus primarily on shooting and the next we focus primarily on ball handling and driving moves to the hoop. I will provide that workout in a follow up article.

The boys lift weights every other day with their football program and I think that is enough to help them develop their strength.

That is it! The rest of the day they have to themselves. I never mind what else they do with their day as long as we have completed the daily workout. I know their summer will lead to them being better athletes and they will be able to keep up with the athletes who are specializing in certain sports.

The History of Nunchucks

Jeet Kune Do was created by Bruce Lee. It swept the world with its hurricane-like moves. Jeet Kune Do was derived from Chinese Kung Fu Wing Chun. Weapons include Nunchucks, short sticks and long sticks. But the most famous and awesome among those is obviously the Nunchucks.

Chuck Drill

Nunchuck was originally called the Rotating Dragon Stick. It was invented by the Chinese emperor of the Song Dynasty. Originally, a rotating dragon stick has one longer chuck and a short chuck connected by metal links. During that age, these kind of cold weapons are used mainly to attack legs of horses, to destroy armors and other hard weapons, so that the enemies lose their ability to fight and surrender. Later, the rotating dragon stick was brought to Philippine and Japan. That is why it got the Japanese name of Nunchuck. Finally, Bruce Lee refined it and brought it up to the movie screen and introduced it to the world.

Chuck Drill

The skills and techniques of Nunchuck are very flexible. You can attack from almost any directions, head, arms, waist, ribs, knee or thigh. It is very powerful because it is that flexible.

Along with the development of Jeet Kune Do, the Nunchuck is becoming more and more popular and loved by the public who are interested in martial art. Due to the promotion of Jeet Kune Do in many different country by different masters, several different styles of Nunchuck technique is evolved. There are the American and European Nunchuck style used by the cops, Philippine illusionary Nunchuck style and the sporty Japanese and Korean styles. They all have their own characteristics and advantages.

The founder of Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee learnt Philippine stick technique from Dan Inosanto during his stay in the US. By Inosanto's instructions, Bruce Lee became an expert of stick weapon in an extremely short period of time. He then invented his own Jeet Kune Do Nunchuck style and skills using long sticks and short sticks. In the movie Fist of Fury, he used his Nunchuck on stage for the first time. The moves like sweep, chop and swing are so beautifully done and deadly. Until the movie, the Way of the Dragon, he even used two Nunchucks at the same time. And the skills he demonstrated became even more incredible and beautiful. The Nunchuck is then practiced by millions of people around the world.
